North Berwick

Bruce arrived Thursday, June 2 in good shape from the States and was greeted with sunshine and 70 degrees in Edinburgh! We wandered our way out through the lovely Scottish countryside to the charming seaside town of North Berwyck, there to play an often overlooked “find”, the West Links at North Berwyck.

Even par going to the first tee, we were faced with gale force winds “going out” the front nine, then turned for home for the final nine with the Atlantic breezes kissing our tushes!

The course is a Classic links style layout, hard against the Firth of Forth with broad, rolling fairways, where it was often difficult to tell where the fairways ended and the rough began.

And oh did the balls roll!!!!! The turf is rock hard and you don’t leave divots – no “lift and clean” here!

Bruce spotted Scott to a bunch of Pro V1s which he promptly proceeded to “misplace”! Bruce, on the other hand, played the same ball for 18 holes!!!!

Cigars were lit, beers were hoisted and amidst the wonderful Scottish hospitality, we limped back to Edinburgh to enjoy some pizza and beer washed down by a lovely glass of Aberlour 10 Year Old scotch.

Tomorrow, Friday, we’re off to St. Andrews, where we’ll be teeing them up in the early afternoon, courtesy of the Daily Ballot, where you phone in the day before and, if lucky, are assigned a tee time for the following day.

Check out our photos and movie and follow us again once we reach St. Andrews!
